Applewhite Out for Season with Knee Injury

MSU freshman guard DeAndre Applewhite is out for the season, the school announced today. He must undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee. The school said that Applewhite injured the knee at practice on Friday, and an MRI on Monday revealed the extent of the damage.

The 6-foot-5, 217-pounder from Memphis (Central High School) is the second freshman to get knocked out for the season with an injury. Point guard Jacoby Davis is out with a torn ACL he suffered during the summer. So the Bulldogs, who open their first season under new coach Rick Ray at Troy on Friday, are down to eight healthy scholarship players. Three of them have college experience, two are junior college transfers, and three are freshmen.

“I’m disappointed for DeAndre because he had put in a lot of hard work and dedication to become a better basketball player,” Ray said in a statement. “But I know the type of kid he is. He’ll work extremely hard with his rehab, and he’ll come back next year ready to go to help us become a better team.”

As a senior at Central, Applewhite averaged 21.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. He led Central to a 20-10 record and a berth in the Class A championship game. He recorded 26 points and 13 rebounds in that game.

A date for Applewhite’s surgery has not been set.

Here is the current roster of healthy players for MSU:

Wendell Lewis, Sr.

Jalen Steele, Jr.

Colin Borchert, Jr.

Roquez Johnson, So.

Trivante Bloodman, So.

Fred Thomas, Fr.

Craig Sword, Fr.

Gavin Ware, Fr.

Tyson Cunningham, Jr.*

Baxter Price, Sr.*
