Mississippi State’s basketball team has suffered yet another blow. Wendell Lewis, a senior center, will be out at least eight weeks after he undergoes surgery for a fractured patella in his right knee, the school announced this afternoon. The procedure is scheduled for Monday.
The 6-foot-9 Lewis hurt the knee in practice on Wednesday, and the MRI results today revealed bad news. With guard Jalen Steele still out with a broken wrist, MSU is down to six available scholarship players. The Bulldogs (3-5) are on the road Saturday for a game against Loyola-Chicago.
Lewis is averaging 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, and he scored 36 points over the last two contests.
Out for the season are freshmen DeAndre Applewhite and Jacoby Davis, a pair of guards who suffered knee injuries before the season.
