Mississippi State has made official the hiring of Billy Gonzales as the new wide receivers coach.
Gonzales, 41, joins the staff after one year at Illinois, where he coached receivers and held the title of co-offensive coordinator. He’s also coached at LSU, and he spent eight years alongside Dan Mullen when both served under Urban Meyer at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. Gonzales brings a strong reputation as both a coach and a recruiter.
“I’ve had the chance to work with Billy and the opportunity to add him to our staff was one we couldn’t pass up,” Mullen said in a press release. “His experience in developing receivers speaks for itself and he has consistently and relentlessly recruited top players at every stop of his career.”
The hire means that Tim Brewster, who was hired in August to coach the receivers, will now coach the tight ends, a position group he’s spent much of his career working with. Brewster has also been given the title of assistant head coach. Safeties coach Tony Hughes also has been given the title of assistant head coach.
Scott Sallach, who joined Mullen’s staff as tight ends coach in 2009, is moving into an off-the-field role as coordinator of football scouting.
“Tim and I had several conversations about the possibility of moving him back to the position he’s coached for 18 years at the college and NFL levels,” Mullen said. “He did an outstanding job leading our wide receivers to their most productive season last year, and is a valuable asset to our staff, and his flexibility and versatility as a coach are appreciated.”
And so it appears MSU’s offseason coaching staff changes are complete. In January, Geoff Collins was promoted to defensive coordinator when Chris Wilson left for Georgia, David Turner was hired to coach the defensive line, and Deshea Townsend was hired to coach the cornerbacks.
