Catching Up: Basketball Links, Baseball Notes

Hey, y’all. I’m off to a late start today thanks to a very late night of work, so I have some catching up to do.

Let’s start with my coverage of MSU’s 78-36 loss to Missouri on Wednesday night. Here’s the game story, and here’s the notebook. MSU (7-16, 2-9 SEC), loser of nine consecutive games, is back in action at 4 p.m. Saturday at LSU (ESPNU).

• OK, got some baseball notes for you. The Bulldogs open the 2013 season Friday at 4 p.m. against Portland, and it’s scheduled for a four-game series. The original plan was to play a doubleheader Saturday, but that’s been changed due to some expected inclement weather. There is now just one game that day, at 2 p.m., and the doubleheader has been moved to Sunday at 1 p.m.

I’ll have a preview of MSU’s season in tomorrow’s Journal, and there will be videos of pitcher Jacob Lindgren – Friday’s starter – and first baseman Wes Rea on the blog. I also did an interview with Aaron Fitt of Baseball America, and you’ll be able to hear it on my show, LockeDown Corner, at 7 a.m. Friday on BulldogSportsRadio.com. I might even post the audio of that interview here.

• The Golden Spikes Award, which goes to the nation’s top amateur baseball player, released its watch list today. Two Bulldogs are on it: Shortstop Adam Frazier and outfielder Hunter Renfroe, both juniors. Frazier led the team with a .371 batting average last season, and he also led in runs scored (45) and stolen bases (nine) while turning in solid work in the field. MSU led the nation in double plays turned last season.

Renfroe hit .252 with four home runs and 25 RBIs last season, and he’s expected to make a jump offensively this spring. He’s got good speed and a huge arm, and a lot of people believe he can be a big-time five-tool player.

It’s a 50-player watch list, and it will be expanded to 60 on May 2. Semifinalists will be revealed May 28, and three finalists will be selected and announced June 4.

• I’ve written a story on new MSU receivers coach Billy Gonzales, and it will hopefully run tomorrow, space permittin’.

I am the online content coordinator for DJournal.com. Previously at the Journal, I covered Mississippi State athletics (2008-13), high schools (2004-08), and was on the copy desk (2002-04). I'm working on a recipe for bacon-flavored coffee, which would solve all the world's problems.
