MSU Receives $500,000 Gift for Basketball Locker Room Upgrade

Mississippi State’s men’s basketball team will be getting a big upgrade to its locker room thanks to a $500,000 donation by alumnus Danny Cupit, the school announced today.

The half-million-dollar gift, which is part of the Bulldog Club’s “Today, Tomorrow, Forever” facility initiative, will “enhance” the Bulldogs’ current locker room, according to a school news release. Cupit, a 1967 graduate who now owns a law firm in Jackson, had praise for both athletics director Scott Stricklin and first-year coach Rick Ray.

“I believe Rick Ray has tremendous potential, and I want recruits to see that Mississippi State can have the type of facilities other national programs have,” Cupit said in the release. “And with a few enhancements to add to what we already have, I know that can be achieved. He has dealt with a lot of adversity this season, but that hasn’t stopped him from keeping this team together and fighting hard. I just wanted to do my part to help bring the program back to the level we’ve enjoyed in the past.”

Cupit’s gift will give MSU’s locker room its first renovation since 2003, when Humphrey Coliseum got a $1.8 million upgrade.

It’s been less than two years since State opened the Mize Pavilion, an $11.7 million practice facility.

MSU is 8-20 (3-13 SEC) heading into the final week of the regular season. Ray has dealt with personnel losses, injuries and suspensions since arriving last year, but he believes the facilities at MSU will help him bring the program back to respectability.

“The opportunity to upgrade to our locker room is a great start to taking our program to the next level,” he said. “The type of enhancements and amenities we are looking to add will help attract and develop the top student-athletes we are looking for.”
