Mississippi State put spring practice No. 2 in the books this afternoon in damp, cool conditions. The Bulldogs continued doing installation work in shorts and jerseys – no pads yet – and so there isn’t a whole lot of knowledge to be gained from today’s work. But of course, I have some observations for you anyway, plus post-practice interviews of QB Tyler Russell, WR Joe Morrow and DE Preston Smith.
Morrow, a third-year sophomore, and redshirt freshman Fred Brown looked good today catching the ball. Morrow had several downfield catches, including a leaping grab during passing drills. Brown flashed some good hands, including one catch he made after two defenders tipped it. Junior Robert Johnson also had some nice moments down the field, and on one play where he crossed the field for some big yards after the catch.
Russell looked sharp as ever. The fifth-year senior still throws a pretty ball, which should come as no surprise.
Defensively, sophomore safety Kendrick Market and redshirt freshman linebacker Beniquez Brown each had a nice interception.
During team drills, MSU mixed and matched some of its ones and twos, which makes any depth chart analysis at this point even less relevant than normal. But some notable guys playing alongside the ones include defensive end Ryan Brown and cornerback Will Redmond. Brown, by the way, absolutely trucked right tackle Charles Siddoway on one play.
OK, enough of that. The Bulldogs will practice again on Tuesday. Here are the videos I promised.
