Two days after its first scrimmage of the spring, MSU returned to the practice fields to continue the learning process and build on the work it did Saturday. It was the eighth practice of spring and the first of four scheduled for this week.
With installation work done, the Bulldogs are diving into more advanced learning and application.
“Now we’re kind of going to the second phase of spring where we’re checking plays – we’re going from one play to another, so we’re getting in better plays. We’re not having bad plays,” offensive coordinator Les Koenning said.
The scrimmage took a bit of a physical toll on the Bulldogs, with several players either out or limited today. Among them: defensive end Denico Autry, defensive tackle Quay Evans, tailback LaDarius Perkins, tailback Josh Robinson and linebacker Deontae Skinner. We know that Perkins took a shot to the head during Saturday’s scrimmage; not sure what’s wrong with the others.
With Perkins and Robinson out, it meant more reps for Derrick Milton. He has looked good all spring, and during 11-on-11 drills he broke off a long touchdown run (80-ish yards). He’s also shown an ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
“I really took it as an opportunity to come in and work hard and really just earn a spot, just really get the things that I messed up on in the scrimmage down. That’s what I took today as,” Milton said.
I’ve got a handful of observations for you, then more videos below of Milton and tight end Malcolm Johnson.
• Redshirt freshman receiver Brandon Holloway, who has developed a reputation for dropping passes, caught a touchdown during skeleton drills and did a good job overall catching the ball today.
• Linebacker Matthew Wells had a couple of pass break-ups during skeleton drills, including one in the end zone. Cornerback Jamerson Love had a couple in 11-on-11 and nearly intercepted Tyler Russell.
• Russell hit Ricco Sanders in tight coverage for a TD during skeleton.
• Jeremey Chappelle caught a deep touchdown pass from Sam Cowart during 11-on-11.
MSU returns to practice Tuesday at 4 p.m.
