SEC Media Days: Mullen Talks SEC Title, Defense, Russell, Etc.

HOOVER, Ala. | Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen addressed the masses this morning at SEC Media Days, [topics]. I’ve got some quick highlights for you, then will go speak with the players in attendance.

• On three straight winning seasons: “As you consistently win, at that point you’re going to have the opportunity to go on and take the next steps. The ultimate goal is to go to Atlanta and compete for the SEC championship.”

• On finishing last season 1-5: “The first loss (to Alabama) possibly affected some of the games afterward. It was a great learning point for the guys on our team on how to handle adversity.”

• On what defensive coordinator Geoff Collins brings to the table: “You’re gonna see a defense play extremely aggressive but also have a great time and have fun while they’re doing it.”

• On QB Tyler Russell helping young players step into bigger roles: “When you make that transition, you’re going to have some great moments and you’re going to have down moments. The great thing is you have a guy at quarterback that can keep them in the middle.”

• On opening against a quality team in Oklahoma State: “That really draws that urgency right from Day 1, that the clock is ticking to kickoff. I wanna see how that affects us in training this year compared to last year for our guys. This is a very critical game for our season.”

• On sophomore middle linebacker Benardrick McKinney‘s expanded role: “In different situations we get into different nickel and dime packages, we’ll move him around little bit and try to create mismatches with him.”

• On Ole Miss winning last year and beating MSU: “I think it’s gonna make Thanksgiving night even bigger game. … Not that it hasn’t been before, but certainly it’s going to make it not only an important day in the state of Mississippi, I think it’s going to draw more attention to it nationally of how important that rivalry is for everybody in our state.”
