2014 Football Schedule Breakdown: Vandy Added; Egg Bowl on Saturday

The SEC has released the 2014 football schedule, which means we now know Mississippi State’s entire slate for next fall. Of note, the Bulldogs’ rotating cross-divisional opponent will be Vanderbilt. The teams last met in 2009, with MSU taking a 15-3 win. State leads the all-time series, 12-7-2. Kentucky remains the permanent cross-divisional foe in the current 6-1-1 scheduling format.

The Vandy game is slotted in what normally has been Arkansas weekend, right before the Egg Bowl against rival Ole Miss. MSU will play the Razorbacks on Nov. 1 in Starkville.

Speaking of the Egg Bowl, which was moved to Thanksgiving this year for the first time since 2003, it will be played on a Saturday next year (Nov. 29). That’s due to LSU and Texas A&M playing on Thanksgiving. In fact, no Thursday night games are on the 2014 schedule; State plays two such games this fall.

SEC play begins Sept. 20 at LSU. It’ll be the first time since 2007 that the Bulldogs open the league slate against someone other than Auburn. Speaking of Auburn, that game is set for Oct. 11 in Starkville. MSU is opening the season with three non-league contests, the first time it’s done that since 2003.

MSU has seven home games, with one non-conference road trip – a return game at South Alabama.

MSU’s off weeks are Sept. 27 (between LSU and Texas A&M) and Oct. 18 (between Auburn and Kentucky). Here is the entire 2014 schedule.

Will the Egg Bowl be played on Thanksgiving when LSU hosts A&M, since LSU has stated that they will not play home games on Thanksgiving?

We won’t know the answer to that until they released the 2015 schedule next year.
