STARKVILLE – With sophomore right guard Justin Malone listed as doubtful for this week’s game against Alcorn State with a leg injury, Mississippi State will have no choice but to bring in a first time starter into the fold.
The Bulldogs left guard, senior Gabe Jackson, says that juniors Ben Beckwith and Damien Robinson are both practicing at right guard this week. Robinson (6-8, 335) has appeared in 25 games as a tackle the past two seasons while Beckwith (6-3, 305) is a former walk-on with 23 games under his belt.
MSU also has the possibility of activating senior Tobias Smith, although his return is highly unlikely. Smith was granted a medical redshirt and a sixth-year of eligibility after being plagued with various injuries to his shoulder, ankle and knee during his career.
Smith, who has been in the program since 2008, played in 27 games and made 12 starts at both guard spots but has not practiced with the team since last fall. He has however been assisting offensive line coach John Hevesy as a student assistant coach since the spring.
