As we reported last week, Mississippi State will name former Utah quarterback and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson as its new quarterbacks coach today.

Johnson tweeted this morning (@BDJohnson3) “Thank you for all the kind words. Utah will always have a special place in my heart. Looking forward to a new opportunity #HailState”

Bulldog assistant coaches John Hevesy and Billy Gonzales will share the title of co-offensive coordinator according to Bob Carskadon of HailStateBeat, the official blog of MSU.

Hevesy has been in Starkville with Dan Mullen since his hire in 2009 and their time together dates back to Bowling Green in 2001 spanning stints at Utah and Florida as well. Hevesy has served as the Bulldogs offensive line coach and running game coordinator.

Gonzales reunited with Mullen last season as wide receivers coach. Mullen and Gonzales were on Urban Meyer’s staffs together at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. Gonzales was the co-offensive coordinator at Illinois in 2012, passing game coordinator at LSU from 2010-11 and special team coordinator at Utah from 2003-04.

The other staff shift goes to running backs coach Greg Knox, who adds the role of special teams coordinator to his resume. Knox has been at State since 2009. He last coached special teams along with wide receivers at Stephen F. Austin from 1992-94.

Mullen had previously handled the special teams duties himself the past five seasons.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
