Mississippi State will make its first postseason appearance under Vic Schaefer.
The Bulldogs were selected for the WNIT field and will host Tulane on Thursday. It is MSU’s seventh time in the WNIT and first since the bracket was expanded to 64 teams. Tipoff time is slated for 7 p.m.
“We’re excited to be selected to the 2014 WNIT field. It’s a natural progression in the growth of our program, and we are excited to have the opportunity in this prestigious tournament against some talented teams that have rich history and tradition,” Schaefer said in a release from the university. “We’re proud to have the opportunity to represent the SEC in this tournament.”
The Bulldogs are 4-7 all-time in the WNIT last appearing in the tournament in 2008. It is the second time State has hosted Tulane at the event winning 79-73 in the second round in 2007.
Tulane leads the overall series 5-4 with the Bulldogs winning the last meeting 70-55 in Starkville on Dec. 4, 2011.
Mississippi State is 19-13 and reaches the postseason for the first time since 2009-10. Schaefer becomes the first coach in Bulldog history to lead the program to the postseason in his second season.
MSU is one of three SEC teams in the WNIT field joining Auburn and Missouri. The winner of Thursday’s game will meet the winner between Lamar and Southern Miss in the second round.
