After holding four practices in each of the first two weeks of spring, Mississippi State will conduct three practices each of the next two weeks and hold one closed practice following the spring game on April 12.

In the injury pit today, redshirt freshman defensive end Trent Simpson and sophomore running back Ashton Shumpert joined senior defensive tackle P.J. Jones.

Sophomore wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson went down during pass skeleton drills and sat out the remainder of practice. It appeared to be an issue with his groin. Wilson suffered a slight groin injury during basketball which is why he did not dress for the final three games.

I did not see senior defensive tackle Kaleb Eulls or senior wide receiver Jeremey Chappelle at today’s practice.

Sophomore tight end Artimas Samuel was back in pads practicing as was sophomore defensive tackle Chris Jones. Chris Jones had his left thumb and hand heavily taped. Junior running back Josh Robinson was also back practicing after missing Saturday’s scrimmage.

Former Bulldogs Derek Sherrod and Eric Butler attended today’s practice. I didn’t mention it on Saturday but Darius Slay was on the sideline for the scrimmage inside Davis Wade Stadium.

During today’s scrimmage portion of practice, junior cornerback Taveze Calhoun had two pass break-ups.

Sophomore linebacker DeAndre Ward, senior defensive tackle Curtis Virges, and sophomore Jordan Washington all recorded one sack while junior defensive end John Harris had another strong showing with three sacks.

Junior cornerback Will Redmond made the best play I saw on the afternoon. Redmond went vertical for the ball against senior wide receiver Robert Johnson and wrestled it away from him before the two hit the ground for the interception. Junior quarterback Dak Prescott threw the pass.

Sophomore quarterback Damian Williams threw an 80-yard touchdown to junior wide receiver Joe Morrow and later had a 50-yard completion to sophomore wideout Fred Ross, who went over sophomore safety Deontay Evans for the grab.

Prescott overthrew a lot of deep routes today but had a nice completion over the shoulder to sophomore tight end Gus Walley across the middle.

Redshirt freshman receiver Gabe Myles continues to impress. Myles is going to have his share of opportunities in the slot this fall.

Sophomore defensive end Torrey Dale had a fumble recovery.

At the end of practice all of the defensive linemen circled around Chris Jones as he led the group in up-downs. That to me showed that he is taking on a leadership role even though he’s only been in the program less than a year.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.

Former Dawg TE Eric Butler lived down the street during his career at MSU.I used ask him many things about MSU.Been a fan since Don Smith was the qb in 1985!

Heck yeah!!! Don Smith…believe he wore #15. Had decent stint with the Buffalo Bills. Think he was from Hamilton, Ms.
