Mississippi State practiced on grass for the first time this spring. With two of its four practice fields under construction, the Bulldogs worked on the grass field closest to the softball field and tennis courts. It is the first time the team had worked away from the new astroplay surface outside the Seal Building.

Today’s practice featured a lot of red zone and goal line work during the scrimmage.

There were also several field goals attempted. Rising sophomore Evan Sobiesk kicked a 33-yarder and walk-on Westin Graves drilled a 37-yarder. Sobiesk was solid on extra points while Graves kicked one that barely got off the ground (maybe 3-4 inches) that was rolling before it even reached the line of scrimmage.

Junior quarterback Dak Prescott had a 20-yard touchdown run in which he dove into the end zone.

Sophomore defensive tackle Chris Jones stood up junior running back Josh Robinson at the goal line. Robinson would score on the next play when Prescott tossed an option to him on the left side.

Later in the scrimmage, Robinson attempted to go over the top for a goal line score but he fumbled the ball as he was going up and it was recovered in the end zone by sophomore linebacker Richie Brown.

Prescott threw four touchdowns during the scrimmage. Prescott’s scoring tosses went to senior tight end Malcolm Johnson (15-yards), senior wide receiver Robert Johnson (12-yards), sophomore wideout Fred Ross (9-yards) and Robinson (23-yards).

Prescott was also picked off by senior cornerback Jamerson Love, who would have had a pick-six had Prescott not came back to make the tackle short of the end zone.

Freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has three touchdowns. Fitzgerald fired two scores to junior receiver Joe Morrow (18-yards, 4-yards) and another to redshirt freshman wide receiver Shelby Christy (14-yards).

Sophomore signal caller Damian Williams had a 65-yard scoring toss to Ross.

Redshirt freshman receiver Gabe Myles had ice on his left ankle during the latter stages of practice.

Richie Brown recorded a sack on the final play of the scrimmage.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.

I don’t care how they mix up all the other positions, just keep that O-Line together!!!

I pray that there is a great kicker coming in this summer that we don’t know about. This sounds like some Charlie Brown crap.
