Ben Bracewell felt passed over during the MLB Draft last month.

But the former Mississippi State pitcher did not give up on his dream and it finally paid off after a short stint in independent baseball.

Bracewell had made four starts for the River City Rascals of the Frontier League following the conclusion of his college career. On Tuesday, he had his contract purchased by the Oakland Athletics.

The six-foot, 195-pound right-hander reports to Phoenix on Wednesday to begin work in the Arizona Rookie League.

Bracewell was 1-0 with a 7.56 ERA with 13 strikeouts and 10 walks over 16.2 innings for the Rascals.

The Chelsea, Ala., native was a Diamond Dog from 2010-14 and served as a co-captain this past season.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
